Description: This is an uncommon style of weaving that is often labeled a slave blanket". Although the stylistic term implies servitude of a Navajo weaver(comma) this is not necessarily the case. Instead(comma) such blankets are defined as those woven on a Navajo loom(comma) but containing Spanish-American traits(comma) such as layout(comma) design(comma) elements(comma) warp ply(comma) warp spacing(comma) color scheme(comma) or dyes typical of the Rio Grande region. In this example(comma) the blanket prominently displays a Spanish-American Saltillo pattern first introduced to the Navajos around 1868 and often used on elaborate sarapes. The blanket was woven using commercial yarn and handspun wool dyed with natural and indigo colors."
