Description: The oud is a North African and Middle Eastern instrument similar to the European lute and could date back almost 5(comma)000 years based on a cylinder seal from Uruk. The modern oud has been modified from these early forms(comma) but retains similar characteristics. Defining features of an oud include a staved(comma) bowl-like back to the body which affects the resonation(comma) three sound holes in the body(comma) a tapering neck with no frets(comma) eleven strings (10 of which are paired together)(comma) and a 45-90 degree backward bend in the pegbox of the neck. The oud is typically played with a thin pick(comma) or plectrum. Syrian ouds often have less decoration than those from other areas.
